For large mugs, this is not a good coaster. a lot of my "average" size mugs will not fit. I fortunately use mostly smaller mugs when I have my tea, so for me the coaster is great. Heat does not retain in the cup if it is not completely flat, which is the case for most of my mugs, but I still find it DOES keep my beverage warm just not AS warm as I would have hoped. The heat itself: the coaster warms up very quickly and is hot enough to sort of burn your fingertips if you hold them down on it for a few seconds: so it works very well! Overall I would recommend this mostly if you have smaller cups and preferably very flat ones. :)
